YogART combines Yoga and Art together into a single modality to further enhance the healing process of individuals suffering from a variety of conditions.
Why should Yoga and Art be Integrated into a single session?
Both Yoga and Art have shown to successfully relieve stress and anxiety in persons of all ages; both practices are considered types of "Mind-Body" medicines which emphasize the interconnectedness of the mind and the body. For example, mind-body medicines focus on how one can use the power of thoughts and emotions to influence one's physical health.
By fusing physical practice with mental awareness, yoga can bring the mind into a more relaxed state. Furthermore, yoga postures can help release tension in the body, focus the mind and balance the nervous system.
By using specific art directives and materials, the process of making art has been proven to be calming and soothing to one's entire nervous system as well as elicit a centering effect on the individual. Through the creative process, individuals are able to externalize overwhelming feelings and emotions helping to alleviate stress and anxiety.
The Asana (physical) practice, combined with breath awareness and meditation are used to help open up the body and calm the mind to encourage more free-flowing and spontaneous artmaking. When the mind and body are relaxed, it is easier to tap into the unconscious and allow for less guarded and more uncensored artmaking.
